Lucknow, February 2, 2026: A controversy has intensified over a nearly 600-year-old shrine in the premises of King George Medical College (KGMU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This shrine falls under the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, where a mutawalli appointed by the board deposits the shrine’s entire income—after expenses—into the board’s office. On January 22, 2026, a notice was pasted on the shrine by order of KGMU’s media officer, land acquisition officer, and education union president (phone: 9415914557). Copies were sent to the District Magistrate and Police Commissioner of Lucknow. The notice states that the shrine, allegedly built illegally on college land, must be removed at their own expense within 15 days, or the administration will remove it and charge the shrine committee for the costs.Devotees from all religions have faith in this shrine. Upon learning of the notice, they protested via social media and press conferences. KGMU officials issued a video not withdrawing the notice but instead stating that if they have the relevant file, it should be presented at the office. A delegation from the All India Mohammadi Mission also met the Waqf Board Chairman, demanding action.Serious Questions on Waqf Board’s Negligence: Despite such widespread protests, the Sunni Central Waqf Board has taken no concrete steps yet. This delay risks escalating interfaith tensions, as the shrine holds significance beyond one community. The board should have taken immediate cognizance. Devotees are now questioning what action the board will take. If intervention doesn’t happen soon, opposition from faith-holders of all religions will intensify, forcing the board to face the consequences.Demands are rising for immediate clarification and action from the Waqf Board.
