Waqf, a three-letter word, holds a meaning and purpose that resonates with the teachings of all religions. It is a sacred act where an individual dedicates their valuable property not for their heirs but for humanity, compassion, and welfare in the name of God.
All religious scriptures affirm that the earth and every particle on it belongs to God, Allah, or the Divine. He does not need property but the service of humanity. This is the act most cherished by God. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his son-in-law Imam Ali, and his grandsons Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn brought this ideal to life by dedicating their fields, orchards, and wells in Medina, Mecca, Kufa, and Karbala to Waqf. This tradition was not only religious but also a priceless gift to humanity, aimed at aiding the poor, orphans, and the needy.
In India, many embraced this profound philosophy, dedicating their properties to Waqf to provide resources for education, healthcare, and social welfare. However, it is tragic that this sacred act has fallen prey to corruption. Some entrusted with the management of Waqf properties, devoid of fear of God or respect for humanity, have misappropriated, embezzled, or misused these assets for personal gain. Reports of the misuse of Shia Waqf Board properties in Lucknow for commercial purposes are a stark example. Social media and newspapers frequently highlight instances of millions being extorted under the guise of “Maula” or donations. This not only wounds the spirit of Waqf but also deprives the Muslim community of the benefits these properties were meant to provide.
Inspiration from Religious Faiths:
Every religion teaches that serving humanity is the truest form of worship. The Quran states, “Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah are like a seed that grows seven ears” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261). In Hinduism, charity is considered a supreme duty, and the Bhagavad Gita emphasizes selfless action as the path to liberation. The Bible quotes Jesus saying, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Sikhism embodies the spirit of service and sharing through “Vand Chhako.” Waqf symbolizes this universal truth, weaving together the teachings of all religions. It is God’s favorite act because it uplifts humanity and supports society’s weakest.
Corruption: A Crime Against Humanity:
The misuse of Waqf properties is not just a legal crime but a heinous sin against humanity and divine teachings. Those who have plundered these assets—from peons to chairmen and mutawallis—have not dedicated even an inch of their own land to Waqf. Yet, they greedily exploit properties donated with pure intentions. This corruption kills the soul of Waqf and robs millions of their right to education, healthcare, and a dignified life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Perspective:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the misuse of Waqf properties, emphasizing that their benefits should reach the Muslim community and other needy sections of society. The Waqf Amendment Bill, regardless of its political motives, could be a step in this direction. However, laws alone are insufficient. Society must unite to raise its voice against this corruption.
Necessary Steps:
Transparent Investigation: Conduct government audits of all Waqf Board officials, mutawallis, and their assets, with agencies like CBI and ED overseeing the process.
Strict Punishment: Those guilty of misusing Waqf properties should face imprisonment and asset confiscation to deter future violations.
Transparent Management: Manage Waqf properties digitally and transparently, ensuring public participation.
Awareness Campaigns: Spread the essence and importance of Waqf through religious leaders, social organizations, and media.
Community Involvement: Include the Muslim community and other citizens in Waqf Board management to curb corruption.
Raise Your Voice, Protect Humanity:
The misuse of Waqf properties is not just a loss for one community but for all of humanity. It is time for people of all faiths to unite and speak out against this corruption. This demands not only legal reforms but also our moral responsibility. Let us revive the sacred tradition of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn, who saw serving humanity as God’s most beloved act. By holding corrupt individuals accountable and using Waqf properties for their true purpose, we can build a just and better society.
Conclusion:
Waqf is a sacred trust dedicated to humanity. Those who plunder it are not only lawbreakers but also guilty in the eyes of God. Let us protect this trust and use it for humanity’s service. This will bring us closer to God and strengthen the foundation of equality and justice in society. Raise your voice, for serving humanity is true worship.
