Lucknow, February 24, 2026 – Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai has written a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an impartial and high-level investigation into the controversial assault on Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. This step has been taken amid rising political tensions in the state, stemming from the alleged attack on the saint during a protest against the UGC’s new education rules in Haridwar. In the copy of the letter shared with the media, Rai accused authorities of shielding those responsible. Swami Avimukteshwaranand, known for his outspoken views on Hindu traditions and education reforms, was allegedly beaten by police earlier this month. The incident has sparked outrage among religious leaders and opposition parties, who view it as suppression of dissent. In the letter, Rai wrote, “Prime Minister ji, the attack on Swami Avimukteshwaranand is not just an assault on a saint but also on our traditions and the voice of the people. We appeal for a CBI or judicial probe. The Uttar Pradesh government must not be allowed to suppress this matter under political pressure.”This development follows the resignation of former PCS officer Alankar Agnihotri from his Bareilly City Magistrate post in protest against the UGC rules and the assault on the swami. Agnihotri announced the formation of ‘Rashtriya Adhikar Morcha (RAM)’ in Vrindavan on February 22-23, which will follow the ideals of Lord Ram and Krishna and is being linked to the 2027 UP Assembly elections.Congress leaders see this as an issue to rally support against the BJP government. UP Congress spokesperson Pradeep Singh said during a press briefing in Lucknow, “The Yogi administration’s thuggery has crossed all limits. A fair probe is essential.”The BJP has dismissed the allegations as “political theatrics.” UP Minority Welfare Minister Baby Rani Maurya stated, “Law and order is strictly maintained in UP. The opposition’s drama won’t derail development.”Eyes are on the Prime Minister’s Office for a response. With assembly elections approaching, this could become a major political issue.(Shabu Zedi, Editor, Regulation
