Justice’s throne found its honor from Ali,
That’s why orphans wept bitterly in solitude.Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.)’s son-in-law, father of Imam Hasan and Husain (A.S.), Imam Ali (A.S.) was struck by the world’s first terrorist, Ibn Muljam, with a sword in the prostration of Fajr prayer in Masjid-e-Kufa on 19 Ramadan. When Ibn Muljam was brought before Imam Ali (A.S.) tied with ropes, he ordered: “Loosen his ropes.” Then he instructed:
“If I survive, I will forgive him. And if I am martyred, give him no more punishment than what he gave me.”
Thereafter, on 21 Ramadan, Imam Ali (A.S.) attained martyrdom. This incident is not only an example of justice and mercy but also highlights the dangers of misusing power. Imam Ali (A.S.) was the Caliph, yet he never turned power into a tool for personal revenge.
After his martyrdom, the duty of Caliph was handed over to his son Imam Hasan (A.S.), who teaches the true responsibility of power through sermons recorded in Nahj al-Balagha.Sermon on Power and Justice from Nahj al-Balagha
In Nahj al-Balagha (a collection of Imam Ali (A.S.)’s sermons, letters, and sayings), Sermon No. 3 (Shura Sermon) states:
“O people! By Allah, I would have been the best Caliph for you, but you did not accept me. What has happened is done. I stand before Allah and bear the burden of power among you. But remember, power is for justice, not for oppression.”
This sermon emphasizes the instability of power and the responsibilities that follow. Imam Ali (A.S.) described power as a servant of Allah’s command, not a means for personal ambition.Message of Not Associating Partners with Hasan-Husain (A.S.)
In the same Nahj al-Balagha, Sermon No. 47, Imam Ali (A.S.) advises his sons Imam Hasan and Husain (A.S.):
“O my sons! Do not associate anyone between yourself and Allah—neither within nor without. Do not worship anyone besides Allah, neither power nor wealth. The true Imam is one who governs by Allah’s Book.”
