Russia backs Iran at the UN, accuses US and EU of double standards

Russia once again backed Iran at the United Nations and accused Western countries, especially the United States and the European Union, of using double standards. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said in the Security Council that during wartime, a coastal country may restrict movement in its maritime area, so blaming Iran alone over the Strait of Hormuz is not fair.
What was said in the Security Council
At the meeting on April 27, Nebenzya said Iran is being treated as if it had attacked its neighbors and was deliberately blocking ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He argued that in such a situation, a coastal state has the right to control maritime movement for its own security.
Attack on Western countries
The Russian envoy accused Western countries of double standards and said they speak about international law but themselves use unlawful policies. He compared this to piracy and said the West uses unilateral pressure measures to justify its actions.
Comment on the European Union
Nebenzya also said this is only an excuse used to hide what he described as the European Union’s sea-plundering actions. His statement showed that Russia is once again opposing Western pressure on Iran and defending its position in the name of security.
Why the issue matters
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil and maritime trade, so any tension there can affect supplies worldwide. That is why this issue often leads to sharp exchanges between Iran, the United States, Russia, and European countries.
News summary
