Lucknow Vikas Nagar Fire: High Court Pulls Up Administration, Seeks Reply by May 30

Lucknow, April 18, 2026: The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Vikas Nagar fire incident and directed the district administration to submit a detailed affidavit by May 30. The court has also ordered immediate food, medical aid, and temporary shelter for the affected families ��.
Court’s strict observations
The bench questioned how 1,455 people came to live on 4 bighas of PWD land, how the settlement developed there, and how electricity and cooking gas connections were provided. It also asked the DM, CMO, Chief Fire Officer, and Lucknow Municipal Corporation to explain the sequence of events and file their replies in detail ��.
Fire and damage
The fire broke out in the Vikas Nagar slums on Wednesday evening and caused massive destruction. According to reports, more than 280 huts were gutted, and two minor girls died after being found during a search operation the next morning ��. Several people were left homeless, and emergency support measures were started at the site ��.
Relief for victims
The High Court instructed officials to ensure ration, medical treatment, and temporary housing for the victims. The state government informed the court that food packets were being distributed, ambulances were sent immediately, a medical camp was set up, and a night shelter was arranged �. The families of the two deceased children were also informed about ₹4 lakh compensation each ��.
Administrative accountability
The court’s remarks highlighted possible lapses in land encroachment control and civic oversight. It directed officials to ensure that no government land remains encroached upon and indicated that further inquiry may be considered ��.
