Lucknow, January 24, 2026: The bravery displayed by Hazrat Abbas standing alongside Imam Hussain in the battlefield of Karbala lives on in the hearts of millions even today. The mere mention of his name would make enemies break out in sweat. Abbas means “lion,” and he truly was a lion-like brave warrior.Glory of Birth and Family
Imam Ali had said he would marry in a place where the children would be brave, standing with his son Imam Hussain in Karbala.
From that very marriage, Hazrat Abbas was born. People debate the date of his birth—some say 4th Sha’ban, others 17th Sha’ban—but the heart says it was exactly the day after Imam Hussain’s birth. Right after birth, he didn’t open his eyes until he was placed in Imam Hussain’s lap, just as Prophet Muhammad opened his eyes in the lap of his grandfather. His brothers—Usman, Jafar, and Abdullah—were also martyred in Karbala.Splendid Bravery in Battles
Hazrat Abbas participated in many battles. In the Battle of Siffin, seeing his swordsmanship, enemies fled and shouted, “Ali has come!” In Karbala, he guarded Imam Hussain’s camp so fiercely that no enemy dared even raise their gaze. While trying to fetch water, both his hands were severed, yet he didn’t give up. He became the bravest standard-bearer among the martyrs of Karbala.Today’s Example: Iran’s Supreme Leader
The spirit of Hazrat Abbas—standing tall against oppression even as a captive—still shines today. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, is an embodiment of that same bravery. Drawing inspiration from the martyrs of Karbala, he stands against tyranny, just as Hazrat Abbas stood by Imam Hussain. We weren’t in Karbala, but we learn from these stories and strive to become like Hazrat Abbas. May Allah guide those who love the martyrs of Karbala to the straight path.
