Established during the British Raj by nawabs and zamindars as a defiant response to restrictions barring Indians from entering elite clubs, this historic institution was not only a sporting center but also a silent witness to India’s freedom struggle. Literary giant Munshi Premchand and the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, graced its premises, fueling the fight for independence.
However, in the decades following independence, this iconic club has been ensnared in a quagmire of disputes and neglect. Property disputes and a lack of maintenance have reduced its once-grand structure to ruins. The sprawling grounds, where children once honed their cricketing skills, have been transformed into a bus stand and a dumping ground. Illegal encroachments have tarnished the club’s former glory, while the district administration remains a silent spectator, failing to act.
Local residents have now turned to Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, whose parliamentary constituency is Lucknow, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath, urging them to intervene and save this historical treasure. The community is calling for immediate action to clear the encroachments and convert the club’s grounds into a modest stadium that can foster fitness and talent among local youth. Additionally, they seek urgent repairs to restore the dilapidated building to its former grandeur.
The people of Lucknow have appealed to the Chief Minister to direct his administration’s bulldozers—symbolic of his decisive anti-encroachment drives—toward the club to reclaim its land and revive its sporting legacy. With hope pinned on Rajnath Singh and Yogi Adityanath, the residents are optimistic that their intervention will restore the Rifa-e-Aam Club as a beacon of pride for Lucknow, inspiring future generations to embrace both heritage and sportsmanship.
