Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is celebrated in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s (A.S.) sacrifice. This festival teaches us the values of selfless sacrifice, devotion to Allah, and helping the weaker sections of society. The Quran and Hadith mention sacrifice in the context of Hajj, but its purpose extends beyond the act of animal sacrifice. In today’s world, where our community lags in education, health, and technology, we should utilize the occasion of sacrifice to improve society, particularly by focusing on children’s education and healthcare. This article explains the purpose of sacrifice with references from the Quran and Hadith while highlighting the importance of education and technological progress in the modern era.
The Purpose of Sacrifice in the Quran and Hadith
The Quran, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:37), states:
“It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety (taqwa) that reaches Him.”
This verse clearly indicates that the true purpose of sacrifice is to attain piety and Allah’s pleasure. In Hadith, sacrifice is described as a virtuous act during Hajj. According to Sahih Bukhari (Hadith No. 1716), the Prophet (PBUH) said:
“There is no deed of the son of Adam on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah that is more beloved to Allah than sacrifice.”
However, the purpose of sacrifice is not only tied to Hajj but also to promoting equality and welfare in society. The meat of the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one for the poor, one for relatives and friends, and one for the family. This system symbolizes social solidarity and support for the needy.
The Purpose of Sacrifice Today and the Importance of Education
We live in an era where education, health, and technological progress are the foundation of any community’s advancement. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge. In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says:
“Allah elevates those who believe and those who have been granted knowledge to high ranks.”
Similarly, the Prophet (PBUH) said in a Hadith:
“Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim man and woman.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 224)
In today’s context, when many of the 57 Muslim-majority countries lag in technology and economy, we must reassess our priorities. The atrocities in Gaza and other regions compel us to recognize the urgent need for economic and technological strength in our community. Providing children with modern education, technical training, and healthcare services can be the greatest act of virtue.
Better Utilization of Sacrifice Resources
Instead of every household performing individual animal sacrifices, communities or neighborhoods could collectively sacrifice a larger animal and distribute its meat. The remaining resources could be directed toward educating underprivileged children, improving healthcare services, or providing technical training. This approach not only fulfills the purpose of sacrifice but also benefits society in the long term.
As Hazrat Ali (R.A.) said:
“Whoever helps an orphan, Allah helps them.”
Using the funds from sacrifice to send poor children to school, provide medical treatment for the sick, or create resources for technical education is a form of sacrifice that can earn Allah’s pleasure.
Serving Humanity in the Modern Era
The present era teaches us that true religion lies not only in fulfilling rituals but in serving humanity. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah says:
“Righteousness is not in turning your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is in believing in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and giving wealth out of love for Him to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, and those who ask.”
This verse teaches that true righteousness lies in helping the needy. By reducing our expenses during sacrifice and aiding the poor, orphans, and unemployed, we can set an example of true humanity.
Conclusion
Eid-ul-Adha reminds us of Prophet Ibrahim’s (A.S.) sacrifice, but its purpose is not limited to animal sacrifice. In an era when our community desperately needs progress in education, health, and technology, we must use our resources for societal betterment. By organizing collective sacrifices at the community level and using surplus resources to promote children’s education, healthcare, and technical training, we can achieve Allah’s pleasure and strengthen our community. This will be a true sacrifice, one that is beloved to Allah and empowers our community.
Prayer
O Allah! Grant us the ability to walk the path of truth and humanity, and accept our small efforts in Your court. Ameen.
