New India Takes a New Leap: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Flags Off the Country’s First Indigenous Hydrogen Train By Shabu Zaidi
Jind (Haryana), July 17, 2026
India has created a new milestone in the field of modern and eco-friendly transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off the country’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train from Jind Junction in Haryana. The train will operate on the 89-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat. Keeping passenger convenience in mind, the fare has been fixed between ₹5 and ₹25, making this advanced technology accessible to the common people.
Powered by hydrogen fuel, the train is completely emission-free and environmentally friendly. Its operation is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions while promoting clean and sustainable transportation. The project is being regarded as a major achievement in India’s journey toward green energy and self-reliance in railway technology.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is no longer just a nation that adopts new technologies but is becoming a country that develops them. He emphasized that building a modern, safe, and environmentally sustainable transport system remains one of the government’s highest priorities.
Over the past few years, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made remarkable progress in several sectors, including railways, highways, digital technology, semiconductors, space, defence, Vande Bharat trains, the bullet train project, and renewable energy. The launch of the country’s first indigenous hydrogen train marks another significant step toward establishing India as a leader in clean energy-based transportation.
Railway experts believe that hydrogen-powered trains could become a key mode of transportation in the future. They are expected to reduce dependence on diesel, strengthen environmental conservation efforts, and enhance India’s position among the world’s leading nations adopting green transport technologies.
The inauguration of India’s first indigenous hydrogen train is being seen as a major step toward realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). The project symbolizes the country’s growing capability in modern technology, environmental protection, and delivering better public transportation for its citizens
