In the narrow lanes of old Lucknow, whenever someone fell ill, one name invariably came to mind — Dr. Halim Sahab. The news of his passing at the remarkable age of 106 has left not only Lucknow but every heart that ever found healing through his medicine or glimpsed the compassion on his face in deep sorrow.Dr. Halim Sahab was a gold medalist from King George Medical College, Lucknow. The respect and love he earned during his education and service surpassed any award. After retiring from the medical college, he began practicing in his beloved old Lucknow. His clinic was not just a place for treatment but became a beacon of mercy and humanity. For the poor and needy, his clinic was a sanctuary. He never charged fees from financially weak patients and often provided medicines for free. It is said that when someone in distress came to him, he never considered what they could offer — his only concern was how he could bring them relief. In the memories of many like me, he remains a compassionate angel. Even in the final years of his life, he would arrive at his clinic in his signature red glasses and Wagon-R, bringing not just medicine but healing through his words and demeanor. The distinct fragrance of his prescribed medicines still lingers in people’s memories, a scent so potent it seemed to cure even the gravest ailments.Dr. Halim Sahab’s life teaches us that medicine is not just a profession but a form of worship. When a doctor turns their profession into a medium of service, blessings shower upon society. In an era where healthcare is increasingly becoming a business, Dr. Halim Sahab’s example shines like a lamp, illuminating the path in darkness. We pray to Allah that He grants such a noble soul a high place in Jannatul Firdaus. And may He give us all the strength to infuse the same spirit of humanity in our professions, our work, and our conduct that radiated from Dr. Halim Sahab’s life.
