The results of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Students’ Union elections, held after a long gap of eight years, have been declared. Mohammad Noman Ashraf registered a decisive victory in the presidential election, securing 7,797 votes. He defeated his nearest rival, Mohammad Intikhab, by a margin of 4,121 votes. Intikhab received 3,676 votes.

Nasra Naeem was elected Vice-President after securing 7,091 votes. Her victory is historic, as she has become the first woman to be elected to one of the three key positions of the AMU Students’ Union. Mohammad Hamdan won the post of Honorary Secretary with 8,385 votes.

This year’s election campaign went beyond student hostels, education, library facilities, research infrastructure and student welfare. Several national and international issues also featured prominently in the campaign, including Azam Khan, the Election Commission’s SIR exercise, Gaza, Palestine, Iran-Israel tensions, the United States and Sudan.

It is worth mentioning that AMU had not witnessed Students’ Union elections since 2018. Students had staged a protest and hunger strike for nearly 20 days demanding the restoration of the Students’ Union elections.
