Supreme Court to Get More Judges as Parliament Passes Amendment Bill

New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at reducing the growing backlog of pending cases in the Supreme Court, the Central Government has taken an important step. The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Under the amendment, the maximum sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court has been increased. The Court will now be able to function with a total of 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI). According to the government, increasing the number of judges will help ensure the faster disposal of pending cases and make the judicial system more efficient and effective.
