AMU Former Vice Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor Retained as BJP National Vice President, Party Reaffirms Its Trust Shabu Zaidi
New Delhi/Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again placed its trust in Professor Tariq Mansoor by retaining him as National Vice President in its new national team. Professor Mansoor’s name features prominently in the new team announced under BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
Professor Tariq Mansoor is the former Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). He served as the Vice Chancellor of AMU from 2017 to 2023. Subsequently, in April 2023, he was nominated as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC), and in July 2023, the BJP appointed him as its National Vice President. He has now been retained in the same position in the party’s new national team.
Tariq Mansoor’s Role Likely to Grow in Uttar Pradesh Politics
Professor Mansoor’s continuation as National Vice President comes at a time when political parties have intensified preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Uttar Pradesh is the country’s most politically significant state, and Professor Mansoor’s role in matters related to the Muslim community and the BJP’s outreach to minorities is considered important.
As a former AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Mansoor’s identity extends beyond political circles. He has extensive experience in the fields of education, medicine and administration. According to his official profile, he has served as a Professor of Surgery and also held the positions of Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent at AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
Why Is Tariq Mansoor Important for the BJP?
Along with Professor Tariq Mansoor, another prominent Muslim leader from Uttar Pradesh, Kunwar Basit Ali, has also been given an important responsibility in the BJP’s new national team. According to reports, Basit Ali has been appointed National President of the BJP Minority Morcha. The two appointments are being viewed in the context of the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its outreach among Muslim voters in Uttar Pradesh.
From a political perspective, Professor Mansoor’s biggest strength lies in the combination of his academic and social background at AMU and his political role in Uttar Pradesh. This is why his continuation as National Vice President is being seen as an important signal ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Influence from Aligarh to Lucknow and Delhi
Professor Mansoor’s long association with AMU gives him a distinct political identity in western Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Aligarh and surrounding areas. As a Member of the Legislative Council and a national office-bearer of the BJP, his role has now expanded beyond the state to the national level.
The BJP’s new national team includes six leaders from minority communities, indicating the party’s efforts to expand its organisational reach and connect with different sections of society.
Impact May Be Visible in the 2027 Elections
Although the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are still some time away, the BJP has accelerated its organisational preparations. In this context, retaining Professor Tariq Mansoor as National Vice President is being viewed not merely as a continuation of organisational responsibilities, but also as an effort to strengthen the BJP’s minority outreach and political messaging in Uttar Pradesh as well as across the country.
From being the Vice Chancellor of AMU to becoming a National Vice President of the BJP, Professor Tariq Mansoor’s expanding political role has now drawn attention to the question of how significant an impact he may have in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
