Rahul, Priyanka Stage Sit-in Outside PM’s Residence; Congress Leaders Wear Symbolic Handcuffs in Protest

The Congress party staged a major protest in the national capital on Tuesday (July 21) against the Central Government. The protest march began from the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and proceeded towards the Prime Minister’s residence. The march was led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
As the protesters approached the Prime Minister’s residence, Delhi Police stopped them by putting up barricades. Following this, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and several senior Congress leaders sat on a dharna (sit-in protest) on the road. During the demonstration, many leaders wore symbolic handcuffs to express their opposition to the government. They said the gesture represented their protest against the alleged suppression of democratic voices and restrictions on the opposition’s freedom of expression.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders accused the Central Government of attempting to silence the opposition, misusing democratic institutions, and ignoring issues affecting the public. They asserted that they would continue to raise people’s concerns both inside Parliament and on the streets until the government is held accountable.
In view of the protest, security was tightened in and around the Prime Minister’s residence. A large number of Delhi Police personnel and paramilitary forces were deployed, while traffic movement on several routes was affected.
The Congress said that the protest was not merely a one-day demonstration but part of a broader campaign to hold the government accountable on issues concerning the people. Meanwhile, the police appealed to the protesters to maintain peace and follow law and order.
The demonstration is being seen as a significant part of the Congress party’s strategy to corner the government on various political and public issues during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
