Mumbai: A major conspiracy to allegedly distribute poisonous capsules disguised as painkillers during Muharram processions has been foiled by the Maharashtra Police. The accused, Fayyaz Nisar Hussain Premji, has been arrested.
According to the police, 14,900 suspected capsules containing zinc phosphide (commonly used as rat poison) were recovered from the accused. Preliminary investigations further revealed that he had allegedly placed an order for 30,000 additional capsules and 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the alleged plot and whether the accused was acting on someone else’s instructions.
The timely intervention and vigilance of the Maharashtra Police prevented what could have been a major tragedy. Had the alleged conspiracy succeeded, thousands of people participating in Muharram processions could have been at serious risk.
Many people attending Muharram processions with their families, including children and elderly relatives, have expressed gratitude to the Maharashtra Government and the police for their prompt action. The security agencies are being widely appreciated for their alertness under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
