Bofors Chapter Closed in Supreme Court After 40 Years
New Delhi, August 7, 2026: The Supreme Court has dismissed the final pending plea in the Bofors case, one of India’s most controversial political and defence deals. A bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran declined to entertain the appeal filed by advocate Ajay K. Agrawal, which challenged the 2005 Delhi High Court judgment. With this decision, the legal attempt to reopen the Bofors case has also come to an end.
What Was the Bofors Case?
The Bofors controversy began with the 1986 India-Sweden defence deal. The Indian government had entered into an agreement with Swedish company AB Bofors to purchase 155 mm howitzers for approximately ₹1,437 crore.
Later, allegations emerged that commissions or alleged bribes had been paid through intermediaries in connection with the defence deal. The controversy created a major political storm, and the government of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi came under intense attack from the Opposition.
Major Political Impact on the Rajiv Gandhi Government
The Bofors controversy had a deep impact on Indian politics at the time. Opposition parties accused Rajiv Gandhi and his government of corruption and alleged irregularities in the defence deal.
During the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Bofors became one of the Opposition’s major political weapons against the Congress. The Congress suffered a major setback, and Rajiv Gandhi’s party was voted out of power.
However, it would be more accurate to say that Bofors was considered a major issue and one of the important factors behind the Congress defeat, rather than the sole reason for the electoral loss.
Relief for the Hinduja Brothers and Bofors Company
The investigation and legal proceedings in the Bofors case continued for several years. Criminal proceedings were also initiated against the Hinduja brothers and Swedish company AB Bofors.
In 2005, the Delhi High Court ended the criminal proceedings against the Hinduja brothers and AB Bofors. An appeal was subsequently filed in the Supreme Court challenging that judgment.
With the dismissal of the final plea, the remaining judicial challenge connected with the case has now come to an end.

The controversy that began in 1986 remained a major subject of discussion in Indian politics and the judicial system for nearly four decades. The Bofors name became closely associated with allegations of corruption, transparency in defence deals and the role of alleged middlemen.
